Even the human-resources firm retained to help employees with offboarding, Tandem, quit soon after the layoffs because it never got paid. Shannon Flynn Bevers, Tandem's president and founder, said that she tried to help employees but that Johnson stopped responding. "When startups go out of business, they will pay employees their final paycheck. Johnson told employees to take a weeklong furlough and blamed the issue on a technical snafu. She also told employees they could file a claim with their state labor department or hire an employment lawyer.

Exit interviews are a valuable tool for companies that want to make their workplaces better. Exit interviews are an effective tool for companies looking to make their workplaces better. "Exit interviews are seen as uncomfortable, time-consuming, and just plain inconvenient," Peter James, an executive leadership coach, told Business Insider. "Exit questions need not be complex but should ideally address what we know, what we think we know, and what we should know," James said. "By the time an employee has made it to the exit interview, they've already submitted their resignation letter or email.

A video of a woman filming herself getting laid off from Cloudflare went viral on Tiktok. Over the last year, we've seen similar TikToks of people filming themselves getting laid off. AdvertisementA trend on TikTok that's been simmering for a while but really went mainstream this week has been people (mostly young women) filming themselves getting laid off from their corporate tech jobs. Last week, one in particular made headlines as the young woman getting laid off from CloudFlare pushed back at the HR rep leading the call. It won't necessarily stop you from getting laid off if the ax falls on your department, but demystifying the process is good for workers.

I focused on a client nicheI started working as a virtual assistant in January 2021. I connected with clients organically on InstagramI put all my time and effort into making my Instagram profile engaging. I'd find clients I wanted to work with and comment on their posts and respond to their Instagram stories. I'd have about five or six clients on the go at a time, and I'd work for each one every day. With each client, I'd explain on the call that I had a minimum length of four months for each contract.

Google told laid-off workers that they could apply for other roles at the company. Most staff are being paid until March 31 but their access to internal systems has been cut off. But laid-off workers told Insider that they are having to apply for roles as external candidates. Laid-off staff are not eligible for roles only posted for internal candidates, "so we have a much more limited pool of potential roles," she said. "We're basically being treated like outsiders who never worked at Google," Paul Baker, a laid-off video production manager, told Insider via email.
Too many companies botch mass layoffs

When it comes to mass layoffs, there seems to be no end to the worst, most bungled ways in which some employees first learn they are being let go. “People have to feel they’re being treated with respect,” said Sarah Rodehorst, CEO of Onwards HR, an offboarding technology platform for human resources, legal and finance teams. (Google declined to comment, pointing instead to a blog post from the CEO on the day of the layoffs.) Employees should receive a communication from the CEO or from division leadership that informs them layoffs will occur and offers them the business reasons for the decision. By “small,” Lee means no more than 5 to 10 people, including a leader or manager they know who delivers the news.
Staff who didn't sign up for Elon Musk's "hardcore" Twitter say they still have access to systems. This led to speculation that the the staff responsible for cutting access had also left Twitter. Some Twitter staff told The Verge they were speculating this was because the employees who handled access to internal company systems had also resigned. Out of about 4,000 remaining Twitter employees, less than 2,000 chose to stay on and work with Musk as the owner, Insider's Kali Hays reported. Thursday's resignations triggered a wave of salute emojis and farewell messages on Twitter's Slack, a former worker told Insider.
Read the blunt email that notified one Twitter employee they had been laid off. Shortly after the report, Twitter sent a memo to its employees confirming the plans for layoffs and announcing its offices were temporarily closed. It was the first communication from the company that Twitter employees had received since Elon Musk took over last week. Read one of the notes sent to an employee, which Insider obtained, below: It's titled "Your Role at Twitter." Are you a Twitter employee?
